Barnsley have gone back to the future. The club have reappointed Daniel Stendel as head coach, according to BBC Sport, ending Conor Hourihane's spell in charge and handing the dugout back to the man who gave Oakwell one of its most celebrated nights in recent memory.
Stendel first arrived at Barnsley in 2018 and left a mark that clearly hasn't faded. He guided the club from League One to the Championship in 2019 — a title-winning campaign that is still talked about warmly by supporters — before departing later that year. Seven years on, the club have decided that energy is exactly what they need again.
Hourihane, who made the step from player to manager, has left the role, though the circumstances of his departure have not been confirmed at the time of writing. No contract length for Stendel's return has been disclosed either.
Clubs don't go back to a previous manager without a reason — and the reason here feels less like panic and more like intent. Stendel isn't a nostalgic appointment for nostalgia's sake; he's a coach with a proven method at this level, someone who built a culture at Oakwell that the fanbase still references as a benchmark. Bringing him back says something about where the club want to go, not just where they've been.
The German's style — high-energy, pressing, built on team spirit as much as system — was a natural fit for Barnsley the first time around. Whether the current squad suits that approach is the first question he'll need to answer.
He didn't need much of a sales pitch. He already knows the place.
