United close in on Baleba: what he brings

Manchester United are on the verge of signing Carlos Baleba from Brighton for an initial £65m, with up to £5m more in add-ons. Fabrizio Romano issued his 'Here We Go' on 21 August and confirmed two days later that all documents had been signed and exchanged, an official announcement is the last step remaining.

The deal

Romano's two-stage confirmation, reported by CaughtOffside, tracks the move from agreement to paperwork: 'Here We Go' on 21 August, documents signed and exchanged by 23 August. An official club announcement has not yet been made, but Romano's own framing of the deal as "100% confirmed" puts it as close to official as a transfer gets without a club announcement. At £65m up front, Baleba would become one of United's most expensive midfield signings in recent memory.

What Baleba brings

The 22-year-old Cameroon international spent three seasons at Brighton after arriving from Lille, and became one of the more quietly impressive midfielders in the Premier League. He is a defensive midfielder by trade but one who can carry the ball, press with purpose and cover ground at a rate that suits a high-tempo system. At Brighton, he was the engine in a team built on structure and pressing lines. At Old Trafford, the ask will be similar but the scrutiny will be considerably higher.

Ruben Amorim's system demands midfielders who can operate in tight spaces, recycle possession quickly and contribute to the press without the ball. Baleba fits that profile on paper. He is physical, left-footed, and comfortable receiving under pressure, which matters in a United side that has too often looked like it was playing its way into trouble rather than out of it.

Why United moved now

This is not a panic buy or a deadline-day scramble. United have been linked with Baleba for the better part of a year, and the timing, a deal wrapped up before the end of August, suggests the club moved with a plan rather than in reaction to something else. Spending £65m on a 22-year-old central midfielder before the window closes suggests Amorim had a specific profile in mind and the board moved to get it done.

Brighton, for their part, have once again demonstrated their ability to develop and sell at premium prices. Baleba is the latest in a long line of players who arrived on the south coast undervalued and left considerably less so.
