Police Bullets fire first in Kigali

Kenya Police Bullets are up and running in Kigali. The Kenyan women's Premier League champions beat Tanzania's Simba Queens 2-1 on Sunday to open their CAF Women's Champions League CECAFA Regional Qualifiers campaign, according to Capital Sports. Three points on the board, and the rest of the group now knows what Police Bullets came here to do.

A winning start that matters

This was not a comfortable stroll. A 2-1 scoreline against Simba Queens, one of the more formidable sides in the CECAFA region, means Police Bullets had to hold on, and they did, banking three points that could prove decisive when the group standings are settled.

For Kenyan women's football, the stakes here go beyond a single result. A place in the CAF Women's Champions League proper would represent the kind of continental exposure that changes the trajectory of a club, and potentially a national programme. Police Bullets are the standard-bearers right now, and they know it.

East Africa's slot is up for grabs

The CECAFA qualifiers bring together the region's best clubs chasing a berth at the continent's premier women's club competition. Simba Queens arrived in Kigali with their own ambitions, and Sunday's defeat does not end their campaign, but it shifts momentum firmly in Police Bullets' favour.

According to Capital Sports, Police Bullets had been tracking Simba Queens as a serious threat coming into the tournament. The 2-1 win answers that question for now, though the qualifier is far from over.

Remaining fixtures

Police Bullets will need to back this up. One win in a regional qualifier is a platform, not a passport. Getting the first result right away from home, against a Tanzanian side that does not travel to these tournaments to make up the numbers, matters, but the group is not settled.

Capital Sports has not yet confirmed Police Bullets' next fixture date, but further group games in Kigali will determine whether they advance to the CAF Women's Champions League proper.
