Greenwood's Marseille taunt sends Lyon packing
Mason Greenwood spent two seasons at Marseille. He has not forgotten. The former Manchester United forward scored and then aimed a loaded cultural gesture directly at the Lyon end of the Groupama Stadium on 26 August, as Fenerbahçe knocked Olympique Lyonnais out of the 2026/27 Champions League qualifying play-offs with a 2-1 win on the night, 3-2 on aggregate, according to Foot Mercato. The result was bad enough for Lyon. The celebration made it worse.
The gesture that lit the fuse
The 'Jul' sign is not a neutral thing in French football. Jul is a rapper from Marseille, a symbol of OM culture, and his hand gesture is instantly recognisable to anyone who follows the Classique. When Greenwood turned to face the Lyon supporters and threw it up, he was not making a casual post-goal gesture. He was speaking directly to a fanbase that considers Marseille their deepest rivals, in the language of those rivals, on the night he helped eliminate them from the Champions League.
According to Foot Mercato, the celebration sparked chaotic scenes at full time, with altercations breaking out in the aftermath of the final whistle. The exact nature of those scenes, whether players, staff or supporters were involved, and whether any disciplinary follow-up is expected, has not been confirmed. What is confirmed is that Greenwood subsequently addressed the celebration publicly, explaining his reasoning. He did not appear to regret it.
Lyon's Champions League dream, over
For Paulo Fonseca's side, the Greenwood provocation was the sharpest detail in what was already a painful evening. Lyon had drawn the first leg 1-1, giving themselves a genuine chance of reaching the group stage. Fenerbahçe settled it at the Groupama Stadium, winning 2-1 to go through on a 3-2 aggregate. The Turkish side were composed where Lyon needed them to be nervous.
Lyon have now failed to reach the Champions League group stage for the second successive season. The Groupama Stadium was built for European nights. This was not the kind of European night anyone at OL had in mind.
The Marseille connection
Greenwood joined Marseille on loan from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 and spent two seasons there, becoming a key figure at the club. He knows exactly what the Jul gesture means, and he knows exactly what it means to a Lyon crowd. That is the point. It was a taunt with full context behind it, not a spontaneous moment of confusion.
Fenerbahçe are through. Lyon are watching the group stage from home.
