Old Firm clubs hit with closed-doors ban
The Scottish Football Association has ordered both Celtic and Rangers to play their next Scottish Cup home matches behind closed doors, following crowd disorder at last season's quarter-final between the two clubs. It is one of the most severe sanctions handed to clubs in Scottish football, and it lands on two of the sport's most atmospheric grounds.
The punishment
The SFA's decision to close both grounds for Scottish Cup home fixtures is, by any measure, a dramatic step. Behind-closed-doors sanctions are rare at club level in British football, and rarer still when they fall on clubs of this scale. Celtic Park and Ibrox hold tens of thousands of supporters on matchdays, and the sanction removes exactly that: the crowd noise, the atmosphere, the home advantage that cup football is built on.
Both clubs have been found responsible for the disorder that marred last season's Scottish Cup quarter-final, according to Sky Sports and BBC Sport. The SFA has not, at this stage, specified which rounds of the upcoming Scottish Cup will be affected or when those matches are scheduled to take place.
The financial and sporting cost
The financial hit alone will be considerable. Scottish Cup home ties generate significant matchday revenue for both clubs, and a behind-closed-doors fixture wipes that out entirely. But the sporting impact runs deeper: home advantage in a cup competition is built almost entirely on crowd noise, and neither side will have it.
For supporters, the ban is the sharpest possible reminder that disorder at high-profile matches carries consequences, and that those consequences fall on the many who had nothing to do with it. Fan groups at both clubs are unlikely to welcome that framing, but it is the one the SFA has chosen to make.
What comes next
Both Celtic and Rangers will be aware that the Scottish Cup draw could yet pair them together again, which would add another layer of complexity to an already charged situation. For now, the clubs face the prospect of cup football played in silence, a punishment that, by design, is supposed to feel exactly as strange as it sounds.
