Foden has agreed a four-year deal running to 2030, with a one-year option on top of that. The contract lands at the end of what Foden himself has described as a turbulent 2024/25 — mental and physical struggles, a dip in form that felt uncharacteristic for a player who won PFA Players' Player of the Year just twelve months prior. Guardiola, not a man who reaches for sentiment easily, called the deal 'the next era of this football club, built on Phil.' That is not a line you throw away.

What would make sense

All of it. Foden is the living proof of City's academy model — the kid from Stockport who became the best player in England for a season, who stayed when he could have tested the market, who is now being handed the keys to whatever comes next at the Etihad. A difficult year doesn't rewrite that story. It just adds a chapter. Guardiola clearly sees the new contract as a statement of intent — that City's post-Haaland, post-De Bruyne transition runs through Foden.

What still needs to happen

The deal is agreed in principle, so formal signing and full announcement are the remaining steps — but at this point that is paperwork, not drama. Foden then has the small matter of rediscovering the form that made him undroppable. The contract buys him time. What he does with it is the only question left.
