PSG's fire-sale is remaking the Premier League
Paris Saint-Germain are cashing out, and two Premier League clubs are the beneficiaries. Liverpool have reached an agreement in principle with PSG to sign France international Bradley Barcola in a package worth £120m, according to Sky Sports and confirmed by David Ornstein. Simultaneously, Aston Villa have confirmed the club-record signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea and reached a verbal agreement to bring in PSG winger Ibrahim Mbaye. One window, two clubs, one Parisian clearout, and a very uncomfortable few days ahead for Cody Gakpo.
Liverpool land their marquee signing
Talks between Liverpool and PSG progressed across several days from 26 August, with optimism building steadily before the agreement was reached in principle around 27–28 August, per Sky Sports. The £120m package makes Barcola one of the most expensive signings in Liverpool's history and brings one of Ligue 1's most dynamic wingers to the Premier League.
Barcola, 22, was a central figure in Luis Enrique's PSG side, capable of stretching defences from the left and producing in the biggest matches. At £120m, Arne Slot is not buying potential, he is buying a player who has already delivered at the highest level of European football.
Personal terms are not yet confirmed as fully signed across all sources, with the deal still described as 'in principle' rather than complete. Deadline proximity will determine how quickly the paperwork follows.
Gakpo: the question nobody at Anfield wants to answer yet
Barcola's arrival does not sit comfortably alongside Cody Gakpo's continued presence in the squad. Both operate on the left, both want minutes, and Slot is not the kind of manager who carries passengers. Gakpo has been a reliable contributor since joining from PSV, but a £120m investment in the same position puts him behind Barcola in the pecking order Slot is building. Whether that means a loan, a sale or a rotation role for the Dutchman is a conversation Liverpool will have to have, and soon.
Villa go again
While Liverpool were closing in on Barcola, Aston Villa were doing their own business. The club confirmed the signing of Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for a club-record fee, adding a proven Premier League striker to Unai Emery's options. Then came the Mbaye news: a verbal agreement with PSG for the Senegal winger, per Sky Sports and Ornstein, though paperwork is still pending and the deal is not yet over the line.
Taken together, Villa's window has delivered a club-record striker and, if Mbaye completes, a wide option with the pace to trouble Champions League defences. Jackson scored consistently in the Premier League. Mbaye adds width to an attack that already caused problems in Europe last season. Emery is building a squad that can compete at that level, not just qualify for it.
PSG's summer, reframed
The broader story here is what PSG are doing. Selling Barcola for £120m and offloading Mbaye in the same window suggests a significant reshaping under Luis Enrique, with the club willing to move on players who were, until recently, central to their project. Whether that money is being reinvested elsewhere in Paris is a separate question, but the Premier League is the clear winner from whatever internal decisions are being made at the Parc des Princes.
