Kenya's Shilwatso heads to Turkey
Euphrasier Shilwatso is heading to Turkey. The Harambee Starlets defender has signed for Haymana Spor Kulubu, according to Capital Sports, reportedly on the back of a performance that caught the club's eye and earned her a professional contract abroad. She is the second Kenyan player to join Haymana Spor in a matter of weeks.
The move
Capital Sports reports that Shilwatso's signing followed what the outlet describes as a 'five-star show', though the specific context, whether a trial, a tournament appearance or a match, has not been detailed. What is clear is that Haymana Spor Kulubu came away convinced enough to make the deal happen.
A note on the club: Haymana Spor Kulubu are based in Haymana, a district of Ankara province. They are not among Turkey's top-tier women's football sides, so the 'Turkish giants' framing in some coverage is doing a fair amount of heavy lifting. That does not diminish the move. A professional contract in a UEFA-affiliated league is a professional contract, and for a Kenyan women's international, that matters.
The bigger Kenyan picture
What makes this more than a routine signing is the pattern it suggests. Shilwatso is the second Kenyan to join Haymana Spor in a short period, which points to something more deliberate than coincidence, a scouting relationship, a recommendation chain, or simply a club that has noticed Kenyan defenders can do a job at this level.
Kenyan women's football has been building quietly. The Harambee Starlets have been more visible on the continental stage, and players earning moves to professional clubs in Europe and Turkey is the kind of downstream effect that takes years to show up and then arrives in clusters. Two Kenyans at the same Turkish club within weeks of each other is a cluster.
Contract length and fee details have not been reported. The identity of the first Kenyan at the club has also not been confirmed in available coverage. Haymana Spor have now signed at least two Harambee Starlets players in quick succession; Shilwatso is the confirmed one.
