Nyanza's champions want it again
Grassroots football doesn't get bigger in Nyanza than Safaricom Chapa Dimba, and the two names sitting at the top of it are about to find out how hard it is to stay there.
Obunga FC and Plateau Queens, known to most in the region as Nyakach Girls, go into the new Chapa Dimba cycle as the team to beat rather than the team chasing. According to Capital Sports, both sides are preparing to defend titles they hold not just in Nyanza but nationally, a rare double for community-level football in Kenya.
That's the part worth sitting with. Chapa Dimba na Safaricom has built a reputation as the country's biggest grassroots pipeline, the kind of tournament that turns estate pitches and county tarmac grounds into proving spots for players who might never see a scouting network otherwise. Winning your region is one thing. Winning it and then going on to lift the national title, as Obunga FC and Plateau Queens have done, is the kind of thing that changes how a club talks about itself.
What retaining actually means here
Defending champions in grassroots football don't get the luxuries a Premier League title holder gets: no transfer window to strengthen, no fixture list handed to you months in advance with build-up shows attached. Squads shift year to year as players age out of eligibility, move for school, or simply stop playing. So a repeat, if either Obunga FC or Plateau Queens manage it, says less about squad continuity and more about a structure underneath the team that keeps producing.
For Nyakach Girls in particular, the national title carries extra weight. Kenyan women's grassroots football gets a fraction of the attention men's leagues do, and a Nyanza side going all the way to a national crown is exactly the kind of story that tends to get buried under bigger headlines elsewhere. It shouldn't be.
Details on the new tournament's format, dates and likely opponents haven't been laid out yet in what Capital Sports has published so far. What is clear is the shape of the challenge: two regional and national champions, both aware that everyone else in Nyanza will be building their season specifically to knock them off.
Why this matters beyond the region
Chapa Dimba has become one of the more reliable feeders into Kenya's wider football conversation, and champions tend to get noticed. If Obunga FC or Plateau Queens go back to back, expect the names to travel further than Nyanza this time.
