United's Casemiro problem isn't going away

It's not a coincidence. In the four Premier League matches this season where Casemiro did not start, United failed to win a single one. That's not a sample size you can wave away. It's a pattern — and it points directly at a squad-building failure in central midfield that has been quietly building for two years.

Casemiro, at this stage of his career, is not supposed to be the load-bearing wall. He's supposed to be the experienced anchor while younger legs do the running around him. Instead, he's the one thing United cannot function without — and that tells you everything about the depth, or lack of it, sitting behind him.

What he actually does

The easy read on Casemiro is that he wins the ball back. He does — but that undersells it. He also controls tempo in the moments when United are most vulnerable: transitions, set-piece phases, the ten minutes after conceding. Without him, United's midfield tends to lose its shape under pressure, and the space between the lines opens up for opponents to exploit. It's less about what he creates and more about what he prevents.

That kind of player — the one who makes the chaos stop — is genuinely difficult to replace. You can't just buy a box-to-box runner and call it done.

Carrick's summer brief

With Casemiro's departure from Old Trafford widely expected this summer, Carrick faces a transfer window with a very clear priority. United need a midfielder who can screen the back four, read the game quickly, and hold a structure when things get stretched. A profile closer to a deep-lying organiser than an attack-minded eight.

The market for that type isn't short — but the market for that type at the level United need, available this summer, at a price that makes sense, is considerably thinner. Carrick will know that. So will the board.
