The goal that did it

Leandro Trossard gets a shot away and Jan Oblak, who has been the reason this tie was ever close, parries it directly into the path of Bukayo Saka. From three yards out, Saka doesn't miss. He never does. The Emirates goes up like a pressure cooker that's been waiting nineteen years to blow.

On aggregate, Arsenal go through 2-1. It's not pretty. It doesn't need to be.

The second half they had to survive

Atlético come out after the break doing what Diego Simeone's sides always do — they make you feel like the ground is shifting under you. Julián Álvarez, who has been a constant menace all night, forces David Raya into two saves that, in a different timeline, send this to extra time. Raya doesn't flinch. The back line holds. Arsenal see it out the way teams who actually believe they can win things see things out — not desperately, but deliberately.

What it means

Arsenal are in a Champions League final for the first time since 2006, when they lost to Barcelona in Paris. They face PSG in Budapest on May 30. Luis Enrique's side, Ousmane Dembélé, Achraf Hakimi, the whole circus — waiting on the other side. It is, by any measure, a serious football occasion.
