What it means for Chelsea

Robert Sánchez arrived at Stamford Bridge with promise and left the first-choice position with questions. He was not a disaster, but he was not the answer either, and Chelsea's ownership group has never been shy about upgrading a position the moment a better option becomes available. Martínez is not just a better option, at his best, he is one of the best goalkeepers on the planet. His performances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar were the kind that win tournaments, and his shot-stopping numbers at Villa have been consistently elite.

The question now is what happens to Sánchez. A £7.5m arrival on a three-year deal does not suggest a timeshare arrangement. Sánchez will almost certainly be looking for a move, either before the window closes or in January.

What it means for Villa

Unai Emery's side lose a keeper who, whatever the off-field noise, was genuinely world-class between the sticks.
