Kobbie Mainoo comes off the bench, takes a Bruno Fernandes ball on his chest, and puts Manchester United back in the Champions League. Old Trafford hasn't felt like this in two years. Michael Carrick stands on the touchline and does absolutely nothing — which, given everything, is the most composed thing anyone has done at this club in a very long time.
United don't ease into this one. Matheus Cunha opens it on 6 minutes — a sharp, low finish that sets the tone before Liverpool have even settled — and Benjamin Sesko doubles it on 14, heading home with the kind of authority that makes you wonder why this was ever considered a risky signing. Two-nil at Old Trafford, against Liverpool, inside a quarter of an hour. The Stretford End is already loud. Arne Slot looks like a man recalculating.
The second half belongs to the visitors, at least for nine minutes. Dominik Szoboszlai pulls one back on 47 — a driven effort that gives Liverpool something to believe in — and Cody Gakpo levels it on 56, finishing with the sort of calm that makes the equaliser feel almost inevitable in hindsight. United wobble. The crowd goes quiet in that particular Old Trafford way, the one that used to precede a capitulation.
Then Carrick sends Mainoo on. The 77th minute arrives. Fernandes picks him out — the pass is perfectly weighted, the kind that only works if the runner trusts it completely — and Mainoo finishes without hesitation. Three-two. Old Trafford doesn't so much erupt as exhale, loudly, for about four straight minutes.
Manchester United are back in the Champions League after a two-year absence. That sentence would have felt absurd at various points this season, and yet here it is. Carrick's interim tenure — assembled in circumstances nobody would have chosen — ends with a result that justifies every uncomfortable decision made along the way. The Stretford End sings his name for fifteen straight minutes after the final whistle. He doesn't milk it. He waves once and walks down the tunnel.
