Manchester City have opened formal contract talks with Phil Foden's representatives, and by all accounts this one isn't dragging its feet. The Athletic reports that personal terms are already in advanced shape — which, in transfer-speak, means the hard part is mostly done.
Manchester City. Boyhood club, academy product, Ballon d'Or top-five finisher, the whole thing. His current deal runs to the summer of 2027.
No one. This is a retention story — City keeping their own.
The Athletic. Reliable, specific, and they have the detail: formal talks are open, personal terms are described as "in advanced shape," and the proposed new contract would run through 2030 with an option beyond that.
Advanced talks. Pep Guardiola has personally briefed chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak that Foden is the priority this window. When Guardiola briefs the chairman directly, the club tends to get it done.
City want Foden tied down well before his 2027 expiry becomes a conversation anyone else can join. The new deal — 2030 plus an option — would make him a City player deep into his late twenties, covering what should be the peak years of his career. The terms are close enough that this feels less like a negotiation and more like paperwork.
Everything about this makes sense. Foden is 24, irreplaceable in City's system, and the kind of player who costs nine figures to replace — if you even can. Letting him drift toward 2027 with no extension would be the sort of thing that keeps a sporting director up at night. City are not in the business of letting that happen. Guardiola flagging it as the number-one priority is the clearest possible signal of intent.
Formal agreement on the final contract structure and signature. The gap between "advanced shape" and "done" can still take weeks, and nothing is official until City put out the announcement with the stock photo of Foden holding a shirt. But the direction of travel here is one-way.

“Stays on Manchester City — different angle, same beat.”
José Mourinho back at the Bernabéu, with Rodri in tow. It's the kind of rumour that stops your scroll — and that's exactly why you should read the small print before you get too excited.
