City break the teenage transfer record
Manchester City are reported to have signed Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for £85.6 million, according to Capital Sports, though neither club has yet confirmed the deal. If the fee holds, no teenager has ever cost a Premier League club more.
A number that stops you mid-scroll
£85.6 million. For a teenager. In one summer window where City were already spending. Bouaddi arrives from Lille as the most expensive teenage signing in Premier League history, a record broken by a margin that is hard to ignore.
Capital Sports reported the deal on 26 August, citing the fee as £86 million in the headline and £85.6 million in the body, almost certainly rounding rather than a genuine discrepancy. No second outlet had corroborated the story at the time of writing, though Capital Sports is a credible source. Neither City nor Lille had issued a statement by the time of publication.
Who is Bouaddi
Ayyoub Bouaddi is a Moroccan international midfielder who has already earned senior caps for the Atlas Lions, part of the generation that came through as Morocco reached the World Cup semi-finals. He comes through Lille, one of the most reliable development clubs in Ligue 1, a system that has produced players who go on to define European football.
Pep Guardiola now has him at the Etihad, which is either the best possible environment for a young midfielder or the most demanding one. Probably both.
City's midfield logic
City have not been shy this window, and an £85.6 million outlay on a teenager is their largest reported fee for a player yet to turn twenty. Guardiola's squads have always needed midfielders who can carry the ball through pressure, read space before it opens, and sustain a high tempo for ninety minutes. If Bouaddi fits that profile, the fee starts to look less like a gamble and more like a calculated bet on the next five years.
The Premier League record is a footnote to the football, but it is still a footnote worth reading. City have just told every other club in Europe what they are willing to spend on a player who has not yet turned twenty.
