Maresca's City: nervy, late, but winning

For thirteen years, Manchester City matches had a certain shape to them: controlled, suffocating, usually decided before the nerves had time to arrive. Maresca's debut offered something different. City were behind, the crowd was unsettled, and the new manager was watching from a touchline that Pep Guardiola occupied for nine seasons.

The comeback, when it came, arrived in the kind of late flurry that City fans have grown used to, but the route to it felt unfamiliar. Bournemouth, who have made a habit of causing problems for the top six, had the lead and were defending it. City had to find another gear.

Gvardiol: the man for the moment

Joško Gvardiol has spent the last year establishing himself as one of the best left-sided defenders in European football, and here he stepped into the role of match-winner. His late strike, according to Capital Sports, was the decisive contribution in a two-goal comeback that sealed all three points for City.

Gvardiol was one of the few City players who genuinely grew under Guardiola's final season, his late arrival into attacking positions a carry-over quality Maresca inherits rather than installs.

Continuity or transition pains?

Maresca arrives from Leicester City, where he built a promotion-winning side on clear positional principles. Whether those principles translate to a squad of this calibre, and whether City's players adapt quickly enough to avoid more first-half wobbles, is the question that will follow this team for months.

One win against Bournemouth proves nothing either way. One comeback win, one late Gvardiol goal, and a question that will follow City all season: is this a team in transition, or just a team that needed a slow start?
