What Jarrod Bowen's last three seasons actually show

The season that set the benchmark

The 2021-22 campaign was the one that defined expectations. Bowen was everywhere for West Ham: goals, assists, pressing, running in behind, cutting inside. He contributed at both ends of the pitch in a way that made him one of the most complete wide forwards in the division that year, and David Moyes built his system around that energy. West Ham finished seventh and reached the Europa League semi-finals. Bowen was central to both.

That season established the standard against which everything since gets measured. The problem with setting a high benchmark is that anything short of it reads as a step back, even when the underlying level is still good.

What happened next

The two seasons that followed brought a more uneven version of the same player. Bowen remained a consistent starter and West Ham's most important attacking outlet, but the goal and assist numbers did not reach the heights of that breakthrough year. Some of that is context: West Ham's overall form dipped, the squad around him changed, and the team spent less time in the positions that allowed Bowen to do his best work.

His movement and work rate stayed elite. The pressing numbers, the distance covered, the willingness to defend from the front: none of that disappeared. What became harder to sustain was the end product, and in a results business, end product is what gets counted.

The role question

Part of what makes Bowen's numbers hard to read in isolation is how much his role has shifted depending on who West Ham have had available. At his best he operates as a right-sided forward with licence to cut inside and arrive late into the box. When West Ham have needed him to do more defensive work, or when the team has sat deeper, that cutting-inside threat becomes harder to execute.

He is also a player whose output depends heavily on the service he receives. In seasons where West Ham have created less, Bowen has created less. That is not an excuse so much as a structural fact about how he plays.

The England dimension

Bowen earned his first senior England caps off the back of that 2021-22 season, and the question of whether he has done enough to cement himself in the squad has followed him since. England managers have tended to use him as a squad option rather than a guaranteed starter, which reflects the competition for wide forward positions at international level but also, fairly, the inconsistency in his club output.

For a player of his quality, that is the gap that still needs closing.

What the pattern actually means

Bowen is not in decline. He is a player who had one exceptional season, has since operated at a level that is very good but not quite that exceptional, and is now at the age where the next two or three years will determine which version of him is the real one.

West Ham's own trajectory matters here too. The club has been in transition since Moyes left, and Bowen's numbers will always reflect what is happening around him as much as what he is doing himself. A settled team, a manager who uses him correctly, and a run of games without disruption: those are the conditions under which the 2021-22 version reappears.

The talent was never in doubt. The question is whether the circumstances align long enough for him to prove it consistently.
