Kenyan players left in limbo by league delay

The Kenya Footballers Welfare Association has had enough of waiting. Kefwa has gone public with a formal warning over the delayed start to the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season, saying that the prolonged standstill is actively damaging players' careers and livelihoods, and that the situation has now reached a point where silence is no longer an option.

Players are the ones paying the price

When a league season fails to start on time, the people who feel it first are not the administrators. They are the players: no matches means no contracts activated, no match fees paid, and fitness levels quietly eroding week by week. That is the reality Kefwa is now putting on record, according to Capital Sports.

The association's public intervention is a signal in itself. Welfare bodies tend to work behind the scenes, through letters and meetings, before they go to the press. The fact that Kefwa has chosen to raise the alarm openly suggests those quieter channels have not produced results.

The questions FKF still needs to answer

What is causing the delay remains unclear from the available reporting. Whether it is a governance dispute, a funding shortfall, a scheduling problem or something else entirely, FKF has not offered a public timeline for when the new season will kick off. That absence of communication is its own problem: players cannot plan, clubs cannot prepare, and the league's credibility takes a hit every week the calendar stays blank.

Kenyan football has been through governance turbulence before, and the cost is always measured in the same currency: players whose peak years quietly disappear while officials sort out their paperwork. Kefwa's warning deserves a direct, dated answer from FKF: a fixture list, not silence.
