McInnes isn't hiding Rangers' twin crisis
Derek McInnes has done something managers rarely do this early in a season: told the truth. Rangers are chasing a striker because Youssef Chermiti is out long-term, their defensive cover is dangerously short, and the club hasn't won a game yet. McInnes used the phrase 'playing with fire' — and he wasn't talking about the weather in Glasgow.
The striker problem
Chermiti's long-term absence has left Rangers without a reliable focal point up front, and McInnes has confirmed the club are actively working to bring in a replacement. No specific target has been named publicly, but the fact the manager is saying it out loud — rather than the usual 'we're always looking at the market' deflection — tells you the situation is pressing. A winless start to the season makes it more so.
The defensive problem
If the striker search is urgent, the defensive situation sounds closer to critical. McInnes described his options at the back as leaving Rangers 'playing with fire', according to both Sky Sports and BBC Sport — a phrase that tends to stick when a manager uses it about his own squad. Thin cover in defence, a blank in the results column, and a transfer window that hasn't delivered enough yet: the pressure at Ibrox is building in several directions at once.
Why this matters now
Rangers are one of Scottish football's two dominant clubs. A winless start is news on its own. A manager publicly flagging two structural weaknesses — one in attack, one in defence — at the same time is a different kind of story. McInnes isn't panicking in front of the cameras, but he's not pretending everything is fine either. That candour is either a sign of a manager comfortable enough to be honest, or one who knows the squad issues are too visible to spin.
The window shuts in weeks. If Rangers go into their next fixture still short at centre-back and without a striker to replace Chermiti, McInnes won't need a metaphor — the fire will be visible from the stands.
