João Cancelo & Marcus Rashford: Barcelona's odd couple

Two men, two sides of a rivalry

Cancelo's career is a tour of Europe's superclubs, Benfica, Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus, but it was at Manchester City, from 2019, that he became a genuine star. Under Pep Guardiola he was reinvented as a hybrid full-back-midfielder, helping City reach a first Champions League final and later lift the treble, and in 2020–21 he was rated the best player in the Premier League by performance data. For six seasons he was, in the eyes of most fans, City through and through.

Rashford is the other half of that Manchester equation almost by design. A product of United's academy since the age of seven, he announced himself with two goals on his European debut and two more on his Premier League debut, then made his name forever at United's expense of City with the winner in a Manchester derby aged 18. Two FA Cups, two League Cups and a Europa League followed. If Cancelo is City's modern full-back, Rashford is United's boy-done-good, the Fallowfield kid who became captain of Manchester's red half both on and off the pitch through his food-poverty campaigning.

How they ended up together

Neither man got to Barcelona by a direct route, and neither arrived as an established starter there. Cancelo's path ran through a loan to Bayern Munich, where he won a Bundesliga title, before Barcelona took him in August of that year; after a spell at Saudi club Al-Hilal, he returned to Barça on loan in January 2026, ultimately becoming the first player to win league titles in all of Europe's top four leagues. Rashford's route was rockier still: after slipping down the pecking order at Old Trafford, he was loaned to Aston Villa in 2025, then moved on to Barcelona. Both were, in effect, reclamation projects, proven talents needing a new stage rather than marquee statement signings.

What they achieved together, whether they shared much of the pitch or simply the campaign, is stated plainly in the record books: Barcelona won La Liga in 2025–26, and both Cancelo and Rashford were part of that title-winning squad. For Rashford it added a first major trophy outside Manchester to a career built entirely around Old Trafford; for Cancelo it was another marker in a startling collection of honours across the continent.

Why it still feels odd

Put a City shirt and a United shirt in the same photo and most fans wince instinctively, the rivalry runs too deep for it to feel natural. Yet football has a way of throwing careers together that supporters would never plan themselves. Cancelo, who spent the best years of his career embodying City's positional revolution, and Rashford, who became United's talisman and conscience both, ended up as title-winning teammates in Catalonia. Neither man's story before or after that season points toward the other's badge. That's exactly what makes their shared line in Barcelona's history worth pausing on: proof that even the fiercest rivalries can, for one season, share a locker room.
