Martínez is signed. Is Chelsea's squad enough?

Martínez's reported arrival at Stamford Bridge is the kind of transfer that moves the needle. He is not a squad player, not a project, not a name to fill a shirt number. He is a goalkeeper who wins things, who talks, who takes up space in opponents' heads before a ball is kicked. According to Capital Sports, he was in goal at the Bridge within five hours of the announcement being made. Debut on announcement day is not something Chelsea arranged by accident: the optics were deliberate.

The squad question

Here is where it gets more complicated. A goalkeeper, however good, does not win a Premier League title on his own. The last Chelsea side to genuinely threaten the top of the table had quality running through every line, not just the last one. Martínez can keep clean sheets, command his box and win penalty shootouts. He cannot score the goals, control the midfield or press from the front.

Chelsea have spent heavily across recent windows, cycling through players at a rate that has made squad coherence genuinely difficult to read. The investment has been real. Whether it has produced a settled, title-calibre group is a different matter entirely.

What a title challenge actually needs

The clubs who win the Premier League tend to have one thing in common beyond individual quality: they know their best eleven. They know their system. The manager and the players have enough shared time to make it automatic. Chelsea's recruitment model, for all its ambition, has sometimes worked against that kind of clarity.

Martínez in goal is a genuine upgrade. But the midfield needs to run games, the attack needs to convert chances, and the defence in front of him needs to be organised enough that he is not asked to be a one-man rescue operation every week. Those are the pieces the rest of this season will test.
