Villa back Onana with new deal, mid-injury

Aston Villa are set to hand Amadou Onana a new contract through to 2031, according to CaughtOffside, with the extension agreed while the midfielder is still working through recovery from an ACL injury rather than out on the training pitch.

According to CaughtOffside, the extension was agreed with Onana currently sidelined by an ACL injury, a fact that makes the timing worth pausing on. Clubs don't usually rush to hand out long-term paper to players who are out of action. Villa have gone the other way.

Onana arrived from Everton in 2024 and has spent the time since turning into one of the more physically imposing midfielders in the Premier League, the kind of ball-winner Emery has built recent Villa sides around. His combination of size, mobility and press-resistance made him a near-automatic pick before the injury struck, and this new deal reads as Villa saying that hasn't changed just because he's currently on the sidelines.

The report doesn't detail salary or the specific structure of the extension, and there's no clarity yet on how long the ACL recovery will keep him out. What is clear is the end date: 2031, a length of commitment that goes well beyond a standard show of faith.

Why the timing matters

Agreeing terms now, before Onana has kicked a ball again, removes any speculation about Villa using the recovery period to reassess his future, and it gives him certainty at a point when uncertainty would otherwise be creeping in. For a midfielder rebuilding fitness, that kind of security from the club can matter as much as anything a physio does.

For Villa, it also locks in a core piece of Emery's midfield for the long haul, at a moment when plenty of Premier League clubs are still shuffling their engine rooms year to year. Committing to 2031 is Villa betting that Onana's best years are still ahead of him, injury included.
