United's nightmare draw, Liverpool's dream one

The 2026-27 Champions League league phase fixtures are in, and per GiveMeSport's difficulty rankings, the debate has already started. Manchester United, according to GiveMeSport, are staring at one of the most punishing schedules in the competition. Liverpool, at the other end of the same list, have been handed one of the kindest draws in the field. Same country, same round, very different roads.

United and Liverpool: poles apart

The contrast is the story. Manchester United head into the league phase facing a schedule that GiveMeSport ranks among the toughest of all 36 clubs, while Liverpool sit near the bottom of that same difficulty table. Both clubs are back in the Champions League, both will be expected to reach the knockout rounds, but the margins in a league-phase format are tight enough that fixture difficulty genuinely matters. A brutal early run can cost points before a squad finds its rhythm; a gentler schedule lets a team build momentum and bank wins.

The specifics of every United and Liverpool fixture are not yet fully reproduced across the sources available, but per GiveMeSport's rankings, United's path to the knockout stage is harder than almost anyone else's in the competition.

Napoli's mixed bag

For Napoli, the draw landed somewhere in the middle. Football Italia reports that they will face Arsenal and Manchester City in the league phase, which is as difficult as it sounds on paper. Two of England's most consistent European sides in recent years, both capable of winning the competition outright. The consolation, and it is a real one in a format where away travel and fixture congestion matter, is that Napoli avoided awkward trips to Norway. In a league phase with eight matches spread across the autumn and winter, dodging a long Scandinavian away day is not a trivial detail.

Arsenal, City, Villa: the English picture

Arsenal and Manchester City are both in the competition and both feature as opponents in Napoli's confirmed fixtures. Aston Villa are also back in the league phase, continuing what has become a rapid acclimatisation to European football at the highest level. GiveMeSport's full difficulty rankings across all 36 clubs give fans a framework for the months ahead: who is expected to cruise through, who is fighting uphill from matchday one, and where the genuine surprises might come from. On those rankings, United sit among the most exposed clubs in the field.
