The Athletic reports the deal without detailing a fee or contract length, and there is no word yet from either party on what exactly prompted the switch. James left Colombia as a teenager destined for Europe's biggest stages, and at 34 he is walking back through the door he left through, this time as Atlético Nacional's marquee arrival rather than a kid hoping to be noticed.

Nacional is one of the two biggest clubs in Medellín, his home city, and a shirt he will have grown up watching from the terraces long before Porto, Monaco, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Everton, Al-Rayyan and the rest of that long list came calling. Bringing him back is as much a statement of ambition for the club as it is a career decision for the player.

A captain still worth building around

James remains Colombia's captain, and that matters here.
