Two names off the list

Squad registration for Serie A isn't the same as a matchday squad, which is exactly why this one raises eyebrows. Getting left off the 25-man list is a longer-term call, and Khephren Thuram and Arkadiusz Milik are not fringe squad players you'd expect to fall off it quietly. Thuram has been a regular presence in Juve's midfield since arriving from Nice, and Milik has spent recent seasons fighting fitness more than form.

It could be injury, it could be a tactical reshuffle from the coaching staff, it could be disciplinary, or it could be the first visible sign of a transfer working itself out behind the scenes. Eight missing for Milan

Separately, Football Italia reports eight players are unavailable for the Milan match itself, a much bigger number than a club wants to see before a derby-adjacent fixture against a rival at this level. Whether that group overlaps with Thuram and Milik, or is an entirely different set of absences from injuries or suspensions, isn't clarified in the reporting. Either way, eight unavailable bodies ahead of Milan is not the kind of team news a coaching staff wants to be explaining on a Friday.

Why it matters now

Squad list omissions at this stage of the season tend to mean something. Clubs don't drop established first-team players from Serie A registration on a whim, and Milik in particular has already had his fitness questioned publicly in past campaigns. Thuram's absence is harder to explain away as fitness management given how central he's been to the midfield picture. Juventus have said nothing publicly, which leaves fans reading squad sheets like tea leaves ahead of a fixture that was already going to draw plenty of attention on its own.
