The numbers do a lot of the arguing

In the seasons we have on record, Yamal has gone from bit-part teenager to Barcelona's most productive attacker in real time. His 2024/25 campaign produced 53 appearances, 16 goals and 25 assists. This season he's already at 43 appearances, 24 goals and 18 assists, a sharper, more clinical version of the same player. Barcelona sit top of LaLiga with 21 points from seven games, unbeaten, with a goal difference of plus 24 under Hansi Flick. A player putting up those return numbers for a team scoring at that rate has a case, whether or not he's the one making it out loud.

The Euro 2024 argument

Yamal's pitch, per the brief and the Foot Mercato line, leans heavily on a European Championship victory alongside his club form. Individual awards have always rewarded that exact combination: a domestic season stacked with goals and assists, plus a major international trophy in the same window. It's the template that's won the Ballon d'Or before, and it's not an unreasonable one for Yamal to point to.

Where the argument gets shaky

The issue isn't the numbers, it's the timing and the voice. Ballon d'Or campaigns are usually run by clubs, agents and the press pack, not stated flatly by the player himself mid-season. Saying you deserve it before the voting window even opens invites the obvious pushback: let the season finish, let the trophies land, then talk. At 19, with Barcelona still mid-campaign and the biggest European nights still to come, Yamal is arguing a case that hasn't finished being made yet.

Our take

Strip out the framing and the underlying claim isn't outlandish. A teenager doing this much damage at a club running away with LaLiga, off the back of a Euro 2024 win, is exactly the profile the award tends to reward. Whether Yamal should be the one saying so out loud, rather than letting the season do the talking, is a different question entirely.
