Liverpool's January shopping list takes shape
Arne Slot's Liverpool sit eighth in the Premier League after four games, and rather than wait for the table to sort itself out, the club appears to be building a January list that touches midfield and left-back at once, according to CaughtOffside.
Three separate CaughtOffside reports on the same day tend to mean one thing: a club doing its homework early. Liverpool are reportedly in talks over AS Monaco's Lamine Camara, keeping tabs on Barcelona's Alejandro Balde, and showing serious interest in Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, who carries a reported €90m valuation.
Camara: the one Chelsea let slip
Lamine Camara, 22, was a Chelsea target over the summer, a move CaughtOffside says did not materialise. He's stayed at Monaco, and Liverpool are now reportedly in talks over the midfielder. Liverpool holding talks over a player Chelsea couldn't land in the summer is the kind of detail that makes a rival fanbase wince a little.
Balde: a left-back short on minutes
Alejandro Balde is the trickiest of the three to read. CaughtOffside frames Liverpool's interest as monitoring rather than anything advanced, and the report notes playing-time issues at Barcelona without spelling out why. Left-back has not been flagged elsewhere as an obvious problem area for Slot's side, which makes Balde's inclusion here feel more like insurance than urgency.
Nmecha: the €90m midfielder
Felix Nmecha at Borussia Dortmund is the priciest name on the list, and CaughtOffside describes Liverpool's interest as serious rather than casual. No fee has been discussed publicly and no bid is on the table, but a €90m valuation attached to a Bundesliga midfielder tells you Dortmund aren't planning to let him go cheap if it comes to that.
Why now
Eighth place with one win from four is not a crisis, but it's enough of a nudge to go shopping in January rather than wait for the summer. None of the three stories here have moved past talks, monitoring and interest, so a lot has to happen before any of Camara, Balde or Nmecha actually walks through the door at Anfield.
Will Liverpool actually sign one of these three midfielders in January?
