PSG escape Lille with a point they barely deserved

A point that felt like a lot of work

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy is never a comfortable place for a Parisian away day, and on Matchday 2 of the Ligue 1 season it was even less so. Lille pressed, dominated possession in key phases, and gave Luis Enrique's side a serious examination. That PSG came away with anything at all owed more to character than control.

The 2-2 scoreline flatters nobody in particular. Lille will feel they let two points slip. PSG will know they were fortunate not to lose.

Marquinhos and the mentality spin

Captain Marquinhos spoke after the final whistle and leaned on the word mentality, according to Foot Mercato. It is the kind of post-match framing that can mean two things: a team that digs in when it matters, or a team that keeps having to dig in because it keeps putting itself in trouble. After one draw from two Ligue 1 games, it is too early to say which version this is.

What is not too early to say is that PSG looked a different proposition without Ousmane Dembélé. The forward was absent from the squad through injury, and his absence created a flatness in transition that Lille were happy to exploit. How long he is out for is not yet clear.

Early questions, not alarms

Two games in, PSG sit with a draw away at one of France's better sides. That is not a crisis. But a team of their resources being outplayed at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, relying on the captain's post-match character assessment to paper over the cracks, is a problem Luis Enrique will want solved before Dembélé returns and masks it again.

Lille, for their part, will take confidence from this. They pushed the champions and came close to winning it. The north of France has a habit of making PSG uncomfortable, and nothing about Thursday night suggested that is about to change.
