Portugal beat Norway without their all-time top scorer starting, and since then Ronaldo has been pictured nowhere near the main training group. According to The Guardian, he has been training alone in the gym since the weekend, a detail that on its own might mean nothing, but paired with a benching from Jesus, it has turned into the story dominating the build-up to Thursday's match in Denmark.

Nobody in the camp has called this a fallout. Nobody has called it nothing, either. Jesus has not been quoted explaining the decision to leave out a 41-year-old with more international goals than anyone in the sport's history, and that silence is doing a lot of the talking right now.

Tactical call or something else

There are two ways to read the bench decision in Norway. One is straightforward squad management: a coach protecting a 41-year-old's legs against a team he can afford to beat without him, then bringing him back fresh for Denmark. The other is that something has shifted between manager and talisman, and training alone since the weekend is Ronaldo's response to being dropped rather than a coincidence of scheduling.

Both are plausible. Neither is confirmed. What is confirmed is the sequence: benched in Norway, then absent from group sessions from the weekend onward. Portugal's camp hasn't offered a fuller explanation, and until Jesus or Ronaldo speaks on it, the gap between those two facts is where the speculation lives.

What Thursday tells us

The Denmark fixture is now doing double duty as a football match and a referendum on where this stands. If he's benched again, or left out of the squad entirely, the rift framing gets very hard to argue against.

Ronaldo remains Portugal's record goalscorer by a distance that isn't close, which is exactly why a coach benching him is news rather than routine, and why any suggestion of tension with Jesus lands as a story about the national team's direction rather than one man's ego.
