Tonali doubt for Newcastle vs Liverpool, Italy watching

Football Italia is reporting that Sandro Tonali faces a spell out for Newcastle ahead of the visit of Liverpool, and the vagueness around why is doing more talking than the report itself.

Eddie Howe hasn't gone into detail. Asked about Sandro Tonali ahead of the visit of Liverpool, Football Italia's report suggests the Italy midfielder is a doubt, without saying whether it's an injury, a fitness issue or something else entirely. That kind of gap tends to travel further than a straight answer.

For Newcastle it would be a real absence to manage against a Liverpool side under Arne Slot that will want to dominate midfield tempo. Tonali has been a fixture on Tyneside this season, and Premier League figures have him at 344 minutes so far in the current campaign after 2,534 minutes last season, when he chipped in with two assists. He's not been prolific in front of goal at Newcastle, still without a Premier League goal this term or last, but his defensive numbers tell their own story: 35 tackles and 147 ball recoveries across 2025/26, the kind of engine-room work that doesn't always show up on a highlight reel.

Italy's midfield options

This isn't purely a club problem. Tonali has 32 caps and four goals for Italy, and any spell out of action lands awkwardly with an international window on the horizon. He's one of the few genuinely two-way midfielders the Azzurri can call on, someone who can both break up play and carry it, and his absence thins out options that were already stretched.

Football Italia flagged the situation as a concern for Italy specifically, but the excerpt doesn't clarify whether this is a short-term knock or something that could run into the next round of internationals, and Newcastle haven't put out their own update yet. Until there's a clearer statement from the club, both Newcastle and the Italy setup are working with the same gap: a report of an absence, not a confirmed reason, and not a timeline.

Newcastle's midfield without him

Howe would have to find a solution in midfield without his usual control-and-recover option against a Liverpool team that presses high and moves the ball quickly. It's the sort of fixture where Tonali's profile, positionally disciplined, comfortable carrying the ball out under pressure, tends to matter most. If he's out, it doesn't just cost minutes, it removes a specific type of player Newcastle don't have an obvious like-for-like replacement for.
