Both derby VAR officials benched this weekend

Matt Donohue was in the VAR chair for the game, with Blake Antrobus assisting, and between them they signed off on a Manchester City goal that has since been described as an error of judgement. Neither ESPN FC nor BBC Sport has specified whether that means offside, a missed foul or a handball that should have chalked the goal off, only that the goal stood and shouldn't have.

That matters beyond this one weekend. VAR was sold to fans as a tool for getting the big calls right in exactly this kind of fixture, and every high-profile error chips away at the case for it. Standing Donohue and Antrobus down doesn't undo the goal or hand United anything back, but it's the closest thing to accountability the system offers when it breaks down on the biggest stage available to it.

Neither official has commented, and the Premier League hasn't published a formal explanation of what went wrong. Donohue and Antrobus are due back in contention for VAR duty from the following round of fixtures, assuming no further sanction is announced before then.
