The Kid Who Ran Before He Could Walk

Lennon was barely old enough to vote when he was already rewriting record books. He made his Premier League debut for Leeds United in August 2003 at the age of 16 years and 129 days, becoming the youngest player to appear in the division at that point. It was a debut that announced something special — even if Leeds, in the grip of a financial crisis that would eventually send them tumbling out of the top flight, could not hold on to him for long.

He cost Tottenham Hotspur just £1 million in the summer of 2005. Given what followed, it stands as one of the more straightforward bits of business White Hart Lane has ever seen.

A Decade at the Lane

Lennon spent a decade at Spurs in total, making 364 appearances and scoring 30 goals. Numbers that, for a wide player of his era, tell only part of the story — the assists, the runs that dragged defenders out of position, the crosses that created chances for others, all of that sits beyond the statistics.

His finest individual season came in 2008–09, when he was voted the club's Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season, and the Fans' Player of the Season — all three in the same year. He was also nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in three successive seasons, losing out to Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Ashley Young in turn. Decent company to finish behind.

The silverware came in February 2008, when Spurs beat Chelsea 2–1 after extra time at Wembley to win the League Cup. It remains the one major honour of his club career, and he was part of the side that reached the final again the following season.

There were European nights too — including a memorable assist for Peter Crouch in a 1–0 win at the San Siro against AC Milan in the Champions League round of 16 in 2011. Not a bad evening's work.

England Duty and Two World Cups

Lennon earned 21 senior caps for England, appearing at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. He was part of Fabio Capello's squad in South Africa and started England's opening two group games. At international level, as at club level, he was a player who could change a game in an instant — even if the team around him did not always make the most of what he offered.

Everton, Burnley, and the End of the Road

After leaving Spurs, Lennon joined Everton — initially on loan in early 2015 before making the move permanent that summer for £4.5 million. He scored nine goals in 77 appearances for the Toffees before a move to Burnley in January 2018.

He made 55 appearances for Burnley across two spells, with a stint at Turkish side Kayserispor in between. His final chapter at Turf Moor ended in June 2022, and he announced his retirement from football that November.

Beyond the Game

Lennon has spoken publicly about being detained under the Mental Health Act in April 2017, and has since spoken openly about his experiences — noting that other players reached out to him for advice following his disclosure. It is a part of his story he has chosen not to hide, and the football world is better for his honesty about it.

He retired at 35, with a League Cup winner's medal, two World Cup tournaments, and a career that gave a great many people a great deal of pleasure.
