Isak and Mamardashvili: Liverpool's Unlikely Overlap

Two Very Different Roads to Merseyside

Alexander Isak's route to Liverpool was long and winding. He left AIK as a teenage prodigy compared to Zlatan Ibrahimović, signed for Borussia Dortmund at 17, barely played, and was shipped out on loan to Willem II in the Eredivisie, where he became the first foreign-born player to score 12 goals in his first 12 league games. It was at Real Sociedad, though, that Isak actually became a footballer of substance, five years in La Liga, a Copa del Rey winner's medal in 2020, and a reputation as one of the most elegant strikers outside Europe's traditional superpowers. That reputation carried him to Newcastle United for a club-record fee, where he became the club's talisman, and then to Liverpool in 2025 for a British-record £125 million after an acrimonious, strike-tinged departure from St James' Park.

Giorgi Mamardashvili's path could hardly be more different. Raised in Dinamo Tbilisi's academy, he spent three seasons out on loan at Rustavi and Locomotive Tbilisi in Georgia's Erovnuli Liga before Valencia scouts, tipped off by his performances against Granada in the Europa League, took a chance on him. He arrived at Mestalla on loan in 2021, was initially parked with the reserves, and then simply refused to be dropped, 69 consecutive league starts, a Copa del Rey final appearance, a seventh-place finish in Ballon d'Or goalkeeper voting, and a status as the first Georgian ever to play in Spain's top flight. He became Valencia's identity in a way few outfield stars manage, voted the club's best player by its own fans in 2023.

The Season That Put Them Together

None of that history hinted at a shared dressing room. Isak was Sociedad and then Tyneside; Mamardashvili was pure Valencia, a homegrown-by-adoption cult hero at a club fighting relegation battles far from the Premier League's glare. Yet both were signed by Liverpool, and in the 2025–26 season the striker who broke British transfer records and the goalkeeper who broke Valencia's appearance record found themselves on the same team sheet.

It wasn't seamless for either. Isak's start at Anfield was, by his own admission, difficult, he didn't debut until mid-September and had to wait until late November for his first Premier League goal, before a brace against Ipswich seemed to finally switch the lights on, only for a serious ankle and fibula injury in December to interrupt things again. Mamardashvili, for his part, made his own Liverpool debut in the same EFL Cup tie against Southampton where Isak had scored his first goal for the club, arriving with the burden of replacing an established No.1 and the quiet authority of a keeper who had barely missed a match in Spain for three years.

Why It Matters

Neither man will likely be remembered as a Liverpool great in the way they're remembered at their formative clubs. Isak's identity is stitched into Sociedad and Newcastle; Mamardashvili's into Valencia. But for one Merseyside season, the striker from the Basque Country and the goalkeeper from Mestalla shared a badge, a crossing of paths that neither man's career arc, told separately, would ever suggest was coming.
