Trent Alexander-Arnold and Álvaro Carreras: Real Madrid's odd couple

Two very different roads to the Bernabéu

Trent Alexander-Arnold's story is one of the most complete academy fairy tales English football has produced. Spotted at a school half-term camp aged six, he rose through Liverpool's youth ranks, captained the club at U16 and U18 level, and made his senior debut in 2016 under Jürgen Klopp. What followed was a decade of near-constant achievement: back-to-back Champions League finals, a European title in 2019, the Premier League breakthrough in 2019-20 that ended three decades of waiting, and a domestic cup double in 2021-22. He became, in Gary Neville's words, "the best passer of a ball at right-back" anyone had seen, a full-back reinvented as a creative outlet, his set-piece deliveries and long diagonals as much a Liverpool signature as the Kop's own noise. When he left for Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, it wasn't a footballer changing clubs so much as an era ending.

Álvaro Carreras' path could hardly look more different on paper. A boyhood Real Madrid academy product from Ferrol, he left for Manchester United in 2020 without ever making a senior appearance at Old Trafford. Instead his education came elsewhere: a loan at Preston North End in the Championship, another at Granada back in Spain, and finally a loan to Benfica in January 2024 that changed everything. He made an immediate impression in Lisbon, Benfica triggered the buy clause within months, and by 2024-25 he was Primeira Liga Team of the Year and a title winner in the Taça da Liga. Where Alexander-Arnold is inseparable from Liverpool's Klopp-era identity, Carreras is a product of Benfica's knack for developing overlooked full-backs into first-team regulars.

The unlikely overlap

That's what makes their convergence at Real Madrid so striking. Carreras returned to his boyhood club in July 2025 on a six-year deal, having proven himself in Portugal. Alexander-Arnold arrived the same summer, still fresh off a second Premier League title with Liverpool. One a homegrown-club romance rekindled, the other a farewell to the only club he'd ever known, and suddenly two full-backs whose careers had run through Anfield and the Estádio da Luz respectively were on the same Madrid training pitch, competing for full-back spots on either flank.

Why it works as a story, not a punchline

Neither man's path here was a failure dressed up. Carreras' Manchester United spell simply never got going, he left in 2024 without a senior appearance, but the loans that followed built the player Benfica bought outright and Real Madrid then paid €50 million for. Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, leaves Liverpool with every trophy the modern era offers. Their Madrid stint is less a punchline than a genuine footnote: proof that a boyhood-return romantic and a Liverpool great can, for one unlikely season, end up occupying the same corner of the same dressing room.
