Luis Enrique told him in March. Désiré Doué, apparently, listened.
For a player whose reputation arrived about eighteen months before he did, Désiré Doué has spent a fair chunk of his time at Parc des Princes being described as a work in progress. Brilliant in flashes. Inconsistent in stretches. The kind of talent you file under 'give it time' and hope the club doesn't lose patience first.
The last six weeks have made that conversation irrelevant. Doué has started both legs of PSG's Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich — not as a rotation option, not as a tactical curiosity, but as a genuine piece of Luis Enrique's structure. At 19, and as a full French international, he is no longer a prospect being managed. He is a player being picked.
The detail that cuts through is what Enrique said about him publicly: 'he is exactly where I told him he would be in March.' That is a manager cashing in a prediction, which managers rarely do unless they're very confident or very right. In this case, both seem to apply.
Enrique has always coached with a specific idea of when a young player is ready — not when the crowd decides, not when the transfer market inflates their value, but when the player can execute the system under pressure. Doué, by that measure, has arrived. Starting against Bayern, across two legs, at this stage of the competition, is not a soft introduction.
The broader point is timing. Doué's breakthrough coming now — in a Champions League semi-final, for a PSG side that has rebuilt its identity entirely around collective pressing and positional intelligence rather than individual star power — says something about how he's developed. A year ago, this role might have swallowed him. Right now, it fits.
He is not yet the finished article. Nobody serious is claiming that. But there is a version of Désiré Doué that becomes one of the two or three most important players at this club for the next decade — and for the first time, that version feels close enough to touch.
Luis Enrique told him in March. Désiré Doué, apparently, listened.
