Kobbie Mainoo turned 21 on April 19. He spent a chunk of this season on a treatment table. He still scored the goal that put Manchester United back in the Champions League. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid both came calling. He said no to both of them. Not bad for a birthday week.
Fifteen league games missed. A calf injury that could have derailed the whole season, and very nearly did. When Mainoo came back, he didn't ease himself in — he scored the goal that returned United to European football's top table. One moment, one finish, one very large statement about where his head is at.
Michael Carrick has been careful not to over-praise his players in public. So when he says he wants Mainoo to be "the heart of this team for ten years", it lands differently. That's not a manager talking up a squad player. That's a manager building a club around a 21-year-old.
Both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid asked the question over recent weeks, according to Mainoo's agent, who confirmed yesterday that his client intends to stay at Old Trafford. That's two of the three biggest clubs in Europe making their interest known — and getting a polite, firm no in return.
It says something about where United are right now that Mainoo isn't leaving. Not because he can't. Because he doesn't want to. There's a version of this story where a 21-year-old with Champions League interest from Madrid packs a bag. Mainoo is not writing that version.
The injury record needs addressing — 15 league absences in a single season is too many for a player Carrick is treating as the cornerstone of the rebuild. But when he's fit and on the pitch, the argument for him being the best young central midfielder in England is difficult to dismiss.
He turned 21 four days ago. He's already been to the Bernabéu and the Allianz Arena as a target, not a tourist. Carrick wants a decade. Mainoo, apparently, is fine with that.
