Chelsea's 2027 signing is already sorted

Chelsea have never been shy about buying now and figuring out the squad later, and their latest move takes that to a new extreme: a deal agreed with Atalanta for defender Honest Ahanor, who won't actually turn up in west London until 2027.

Player

Honest Ahanor is the name doing the rounds. The 18-year-old Italian defender made 35 appearances for Atalanta last season, enough game time to convince a Chelsea recruitment department that has built an entire model around signing talent early and letting it develop somewhere else first.

Current club

Atalanta remain his club for now, and will keep working with him as the deal plays out over the next year. La Dea have long been one of Europe's best finishing schools for young talent, which is precisely why Chelsea came calling.

Linked club

Chelsea are the club at the other end of this, and the framing here matters: this isn't a January or summer arrival, it's a deal struck this week for a player who joins in 2027. Todd Boehly's ownership has leaned into exactly this kind of forward planning since taking over, stockpiling young talent across multiple leagues rather than one transfer window.

Foot Mercato broke the story, and followed it up with a second report claiming Ahanor could be loaned out immediately, to Crystal Palace, once the move to Chelsea is formalised.

Reliability

This sits at advanced-talks. Chelsea and Atalanta have agreed a deal, which is a firmer stage than an enquiry or interest, but there's no official statement from either club confirming fee or terms, and the Crystal Palace loan detail is still Foot Mercato's reporting rather than anything either Chelsea or Palace have put their name to.

What's being claimed

The core claim is straightforward: Ahanor moves to Chelsea, but not until 2027. The wrinkle is what happens between now and then. Foot Mercato's follow-up suggests Chelsea might send him straight to Crystal Palace on loan the moment the deal completes, rather than easing him in at Cobham or shipping him back to Italy.

What would make sense

A domestic loan gets Ahanor used to the Premier League's pace before he's ever asked to play a competitive minute for Chelsea itself. Palace, under Oliver Glasner, have had success developing young defensive talent in recent seasons, so the pairing tracks if the report holds up.

What still needs to happen

None of the numbers are public. No fee, no contract length, and no confirmation from either Chelsea or Atalanta's official channels. Until one of the two clubs puts a statement out, this stays a reported agreement rather than a done deal, and the Crystal Palace loan is a detail to watch rather than a fact to bank on.
