England's bronze: brilliant, then barely

England are World Cup bronze medallists. The scoreline reads 6-4 against France, which sounds comfortable until you hear Thomas Tuchel describe the second half as 'turbulent' — at which point you realise this was less a victory parade and more a controlled demolition that briefly stopped being controlled.

The first half that built the dream

Whatever happened in that opening 45 minutes, it was enough for Tuchel to call it 'brilliant' — and Tuchel is not a man who throws compliments around loosely. England, in a third-place play-off at a World Cup, apparently turned up and played like they had something to prove. Given the semi-final exit that put them here, they probably did.

The specifics of the scorers and the exact shape of the lead are still emerging, but the broad picture is clear: England built something commanding in that first half, the kind of cushion that should make the second half a formality.

The second half that nearly gave it away

It was not a formality. France — a side who will always, always come back at you — made it 'turbulent'. That word is doing a lot of work in Tuchel's post-match vocabulary. A 6-4 final score, with England presumably well ahead at the break, means France scored heavily after half-time. How heavily, and from what deficit, is still unclear — but the maths alone suggests this got very uncomfortable before the final whistle.

At some point in that second half, someone in the England dugout will have looked at the scoreboard and felt something they hadn't expected to feel. Tuchel looked like a man who had aged slightly.

What third place actually means

England's last World Cup medal was 1966. Bronze in 2026 is not gold, and no one will pretend otherwise — but it is a result, and it is progress, and it came against France in a ten-goal match that will be replayed on highlight reels for years. For this England era, under a German manager who took the job after the Euros exit, it is a tangible thing to point at.

The 2026 World Cup ends with England on the podium. That sentence still sounds strange. It also sounds, given everything, entirely earned.
