Leeds' defence just got a lot thinner

Daniel Farke has confirmed that Joe Rodon will be out for eight to ten weeks with a hamstring injury, a blow that strips Leeds United of their most reliable centre-back just as the early-season fixtures start to bite.

Farke didn't sugarcoat it. Speaking to reporters, the Leeds boss said the Wales international is facing an eight-to-ten-week layoff, which puts a return anywhere between late October and mid-November depending on how the recovery goes. No detail yet on whether the injury happened on the training ground or in a match, and Farke isn't rushing to pin down the exact date either.

What matters more right now is what Leeds do without him. Rodon has been the defensive spine of this Leeds side since arriving, the sort of centre-back who reads danger a beat before it happens and rarely needs a second go at a header. Losing him for two-plus months means Farke has to rebuild his back line's structure, not just rotate around one absence.

Who fills the gap

Farke will need to lean on whoever else is fit at centre-back, and the manager has already signalled he's open to reshuffling the backline rather than simply plugging in a like-for-like replacement. That could mean a midfielder dropping into defence, a change of system, or simply trusting a squad player to step up sooner than planned.

The timing stings. Ten weeks takes Leeds through a stretch of fixtures where defensive solidity usually decides whether a promoted side stays up or slides. Rodon's positioning and composure on the ball had made Leeds noticeably harder to break down this season, and that's exactly the kind of thing you don't notice until it's gone.

Testing Leeds' centre-back depth

Leeds' recruitment during the summer window will now be judged partly on how deep the centre-back options actually are. If Farke has to bed in an unproven partnership at the back for the best part of two months, every set-piece and every long ball forward becomes a bigger test than it should be.

There's no fixed return date yet, and Farke has been careful not to promise one. For Leeds, the next ten weeks are about limiting the damage until their best defender is back on the grass.
