Nike's big bet on London City Lionesses

London City Lionesses have announced a multi-year front-of-shirt sponsorship with Nike, and owner Michele Kang isn't being coy about it: she's calling it the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in the women's game, full stop.

No figures have been released. No one's confirmed the length of the contract beyond "multi-year". But the symbolism here is doing a lot of the talking: one of the world's biggest sportswear brands has just put its name on the front of a Women's Super League club's shirt, and the club's owner is confident enough to call it a record.

Kang, who bought London City Lionesses and has spent heavily on building the club's profile since, has made no secret of wanting to push the women's game's commercial ceiling higher. This deal, as reported by BBC Sport, is framed by Kang herself as the biggest shirt sponsorship in women's football to date. That claim hasn't been independently verified against other recent deals in the sport, and neither Nike nor the club have put a number on the table publicly. But the ambition behind the statement is the story as much as the deal itself.

Why Nike, why now

Nike already has deep ties across women's football through kit and boot deals with national teams and players worldwide. Putting its logo front and centre on a club shirt, rather than just supplying kit, is a different kind of statement. It says a brand of that size sees enough commercial upside in the women's game to back a single club at scale, not just sponsor the sport in general terms.

For London City Lionesses, a club still building its identity in the Women's Super League, landing a partner like this changes the conversation. It gives other brands, other clubs and other leagues a fresh benchmark for what a WSL shirt front can be worth.

Sponsorship money catching up to the audience

Women's football has spent the last few years watching attendance records fall and broadcast deals grow. What's been slower to arrive is this specific kind of investment: a global brand treating a club shirt as prime real estate rather than a goodwill gesture. If Kang's claim about the scale of this deal holds up against scrutiny, it becomes a reference point for every club negotiating its own shirt sponsorship in the coming seasons.

The numbers stay private for now. The multi-year Nike logo on the Lionesses' shirt doesn't.
