Barrios out for Sociedad, derby in doubt

Atlético confirmed on Sunday that Pablo Barrios will sit out the Real Sociedad fixture, with the club yet to detail exactly when or how the issue developed. Whether it happened during the Liverpool game itself or in a training session afterwards hasn't been specified, and Atlético haven't put a number on the severity either.

What they have said is that Barrios' participation in the next two fixtures, away at Osasuna and then the Madrid derby, is still to be determined. That's the sentence that will have Simeone's staff running extra checks this week, because losing a midfielder for one match is an inconvenience. Losing him for a derby is a different conversation entirely.

Why this one stings

That's a squad still finding its rhythm, and Barrios has been one of the more reliable names in a midfield that's had to do a lot of running.
