Spurs' goalless run has a psychological problem now

Four Premier League games, zero goals, and now a manager reaching for psychology instead of tactics: Roberto De Zerbi says his Tottenham side have hit a 'mental block' after a flat 0-0 with Everton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium left them without a league win and stuck in 17th.

Another Saturday, another blank. Spurs huffed through 90 minutes against Everton without managing to put the ball in the net, the fourth straight league match in which that's happened, and the frustration in N17 is starting to look less like a rough patch and more like a pattern.

According to the Guardian, De Zerbi pointed to two separate issues after the draw: physical conditioning across the squad, and something harder to fix with a training drill. He described his players as carrying a mental block, the kind of phrase managers usually avoid because it invites the follow-up question nobody wants to answer, which is how you actually get rid of one.

The table doesn't lie

Spurs have two points from four league games this season, with two draws and two defeats and a goal difference of minus five. That's 17th in the table, a position nobody inside the club will have pencilled in before the season started.

Fitness or fragility

De Zerbi's framing splits the problem in two, and it matters which half is doing the damage. If this is fitness, conditioning work over an international break can start to fix it. If it's the mental block he described, that's a different kind of repair job, one that usually needs a result rather than a training session to break the cycle.

Everton, for what it's worth, will happily take the point and the clean sheet away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a ground that's supposed to be intimidating for visiting sides right now. Instead it produced ninety minutes of near-silence.

What happens next

Four goalless league games from a squad this expensively assembled is not a form dip anyone can shrug off much longer. De Zerbi has diagnosed the problem out loud, which at least means there's no hiding from it. Whether Spurs can actually solve it before 17th becomes a genuine relegation-adjacent conversation is the only question that matters now.
