City's answer to the Rodri void
Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille. The 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder arrives as City move to reshape a midfield that could lose Rodri to Barcelona, if reports of that sale prove correct. Sporting director Hugo Viana has already gone on record, describing the teenager's potential as extremely high.
The player
Bouaddi spent last season in Ligue 1 with Lille, and what he showed there was enough to put him on the radar of clubs well above that level. Technically composed for his age, capable of carrying the ball through midfield lines and reading the game at a tempo most teenagers can't sustain, he was one of the more quietly impressive young midfielders in European football this past year.
Then came the World Cup with Morocco. Bouaddi didn't just travel as a squad player, he performed, and that kind of stage tends to sharpen a club's interest fast. City, it turns out, were watching.
The context at City
According to CaughtOffside, City have officially confirmed the move, with Viana leading the charge on what is a deliberate piece of midfield reconstruction. If the reported sale of Rodri to Barcelona goes through, City lose the player who was arguably the best defensive midfielder in world football during their dominant run, and that departure, still unconfirmed, is the backdrop against which this signing makes most sense. Treating Bouaddi as the first piece of a longer rebuild is a different calculation to replacing Rodri directly, and a more credible one.
Viana's fingerprints are on this. The Portuguese sporting director, brought in to reshape City's recruitment operation, has spoken publicly about Bouaddi's ceiling rather than his current level. That framing matters: this is a long-term investment, not a like-for-like swap.
Fee and contract
The fee and contract length have not been confirmed. What is confirmed is the signing itself. If the reported Rodri sale to Barcelona does go through, City will need more than one addition to cover the gap, but Bouaddi, at 18, having already performed on a World Cup stage, is a credible place to start.
