Souleymane Diawara's forgotten year in England

Souleymane Diawara's name is etched into French football history as the record holder for Coupe de la Ligue triumphs, won across three different clubs. But tucked into that otherwise all-French career is a short, almost forgotten year in English football.

A career built in France

Souleymane Diawara's footballing life reads like a tour of French top-flight football. The Senegalese defender, who gained French nationality in 1998, started out at Le Havre, where he spent two seasons in Division 1 before relegation hit the club. He stayed there until 2003, then moved on to Sochaux, where he won his first Coupe de la Ligue in 2003-04. From there, his path led to Bordeaux, Marseille, and eventually OGC Nice, with silverware following him at almost every stop.

By the time he retired in September 2015, Diawara had collected a Ligue 1 title with both Bordeaux and Marseille, multiple Trophée des Champions wins, and four Coupe de la Ligue trophies, a record for any individual player, split across Sochaux, Bordeaux and Marseille. He was also named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in consecutive seasons, 2008-09 and 2009-10.

The spell that breaks the pattern

Amid that steady procession of French clubs sits a single, easily overlooked detour. In 2006, Diawara left Sochaux and crossed the Channel to sign for Charlton Athletic, his only move away from French football in a career otherwise spent entirely within it. It did not last. By the following year, he was back in France, joining Bordeaux to partner Marc Planus at the heart of their central defence.

That means Diawara's time in English football amounted to little more than a single season before he returned to the league where he would go on to define his career. It was a spell sandwiched between two much more celebrated chapters, his breakout years at Sochaux, where he first tasted Coupe de la Ligue success in 2004, and the Bordeaux and Marseille spells that would bring him a Ligue 1 title, a Ligue 1 Team of the Year nod, and the cup record that still stands to his name.

Why it gets lost

It is easy to see why the Charlton year rarely comes up when Diawara's career is discussed. It produced none of the silverware that marks the rest of his story, and it was bookended by two spells, Sochaux before, Bordeaux after, that both delivered major honours. Add to that his continued presence in the Senegal national team during this period, including representing his country at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations where Senegal finished fourth, and the Charlton stint becomes a quiet footnote rather than a talking point.

For a player who would go on to be dropped from the Senegal squad for a discipline breach later that same year, then rebuild his reputation through a decorated run with Bordeaux and Marseille, the brief time in English football is simply the year that got swallowed up by everything that came next.
