Alfred N'Diaye's forgotten Betis loan

A loan lost in the shuffle

When people recall Alfred N'Diaye at Real Betis, they usually think of the five-year contract he signed in August 2014, the deal that made him a fixture in the Andalusian club's midfield before he moved on to Villarreal. What gets forgotten is that he had already been at the club for half a season by then, on loan, and on a sinking ship.

On 30 January 2014, with his move to Sunderland having stalled after a loan spell at Eskişehirspor in Turkey was cut short by the Turkish club itself, N'Diaye was sent to Betis on loan for the rest of the 2013–14 campaign. It was a short, quiet arrangement, the kind of mid-season loan that barely registers in the memory even of a club's own supporters.

Sixteen games, one relegation

In that half-season, N'Diaye made 16 appearances for Betis. There is no record of him scoring during the spell, and the football itself wasn't the story, the collapse around him was. Betis went down that season, relegated from La Liga, and N'Diaye's loan spell is remembered, if at all, as a footnote to that decline rather than as anything he did to arrest it.

What makes the spell genuinely easy to forget is what happened next. Rather than the loan ending in a whimper, as loans to relegated clubs so often do, Betis brought him back. On 22 August 2014, now a free agent after his Sunderland contract had run its course, N'Diaye signed a five-year deal with the club that had just been relegated with him briefly on its books. That permanent stint, the one people actually remember, effectively erased the loan from the popular version of his history. Ask a Betis fan about N'Diaye's early days at the club and most will start the story in August 2014, not January.

Why it slipped through the cracks

Part of the reason the loan spell vanishes from the narrative is that it produced no signature moment. There was no debut goal to hang a memory on, the way there would be later at Hull City, where he scored against Liverpool on his first appearance. There was no promotion, as there would be with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Instead, there were 16 games played out during a relegation battle Betis ultimately lost, followed almost immediately by the club re-signing the same player as if starting fresh.

It is a small, unglamorous chapter, but a real one, a reminder that even a player with a World Cup appearance and a Championship title on his résumé can have a spell that history simply files away.
