Michael Essien: the season that made him, and the long road after

The season that announced him

Essien arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2005 as the most expensive African footballer in history, a £24.4 million signing from Lyon where he had just been voted Ligue 1's Player of the Year. His first English season was solid rather than spectacular. His second, 2006–07, was the one that made him.

He scored his first Champions League goal for the club in a September win over Werder Bremen, then produced a late winner away at Valencia's Mestalla in the quarter-final second leg, sending Chelsea through to the semi-finals on his first game back from a knee injury. In December, he scored a stunning late equaliser at home to Arsenal that broke the visitors' long unbeaten run, a goal Chelsea supporters would later vote their Goal of the Season. By May 2007, the fans had gone further still: Essien was named Chelsea Player of the Year, the first African to win the award. It capped a run of individual recognition that had already seen him finish third in the Best African Footballer of the Year voting in both 2005 and 2006, and picked up the BBC's African Footballer of the Year prize.

What followed

Essien's career did not collapse after that peak, he went on to win two more Premier League titles, an FA Cup treble's worth of domestic trophies, and the Champions League itself in 2012, though by the final he was an unused substitute. But the trajectory from that 2006–07 high point bent steadily downward under the weight of injury. In September 2008, playing for Ghana in a World Cup qualifier against Libya, he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and was out for six months, missing the bulk of that Chelsea season. He fought back to help Ghana qualify for the 2010 World Cup, only to be ruled out of the tournament itself in May 2010 when his knee was found not to have recovered in time. He stepped away from international football afterward, worn down by the toll two serious injuries had taken.

The second half of his career became a tour of loan spells and short contracts rather than sustained excellence. A season-long loan reunited him with José Mourinho at Real Madrid in 2012–13, where he scored just twice. He moved to AC Milan in 2014, then to Panathinaikos in Greece in 2015, where he was eventually dropped from the squad entirely and released, a release that turned sour when the club failed to pay what it owed him, forcing him to take the matter to a Greek football court. From there the destinations grew further from the game's centre: Persib Bandung in Indonesia, where he hoped to be, in his own words, a forerunner for other world players to follow, only to be let go a year later once the club's foreign-player quota was filled; and finally Sabail FK in Azerbaijan in 2019, a contract that came bundled with a coaching role for the club's under-19 side.

Into coaching

That small coaching addition at Sabail turned out to be the hinge of what came next. In 2020, Essien began training with Danish club Nordsjælland, working across the first team and academy setup while pursuing his coaching education. The club made it formal that September, bringing him on as part of the coaching staff, and in June 2025 he signed a new two-year contract to remain as assistant coach, a long way, in role and geography, from the night he scored a wonder-goal against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
