Two Bundesliga Rivals, One Blue Shirt

Before either man ever set foot at Stamford Bridge, their careers were already intertwined in the record books. Havertz became the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances in 2018, breaking a mark previously held by Werner. Werner had set it himself while establishing his name at RB Leipzig, where he later became the club's all-time top scorer with 95 goals. Havertz, meanwhile, was doing the same at Leverkusen, becoming the youngest player in Bundesliga history to reach both 50 and 100 league appearances. Arriving at Chelsea Within Weeks of Each Other

Chelsea signed both players in the summer of 2020: Werner for a reported £47.5 million from Leipzig, Havertz for around £62 million from Leverkusen, making him the club's second-most expensive signing at the time. Both made their competitive debuts in the same match, a 3-1 win at Brighton, and Werner even assisted Havertz for a goal against Southampton that October, a rare on-pitch link between two players whose reputations were forged at opposite ends of the Bundesliga table.

Champions of Europe, Together

The pairing produced silverware. Havertz scored the only goal of the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City; Werner had started the semi-final win over Real Madrid that got them there. Both were part of the squad that beat Villarreal on penalties in the 2021 UEFA Super Cup, and both featured as Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2022, Havertz scoring the winning penalty in extra time. For two seasons, the Leverkusen prodigy and the Leipzig sharpshooter shared a dressing room, a badge, and a trophy cabinet.

Diverging Paths After Chelsea

The overlap didn't last. Werner returned to RB Leipzig in 2022, later loaned to Tottenham Hotspur where he won the Europa League in 2025, before a move to Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes in 2026. Havertz went the other way within London, joining Arsenal in 2023, where he won the Premier League and became one of the highest-scoring Germans in Premier League history. Their post-Chelsea trajectories only reinforce how different these two footballers are in the public imagination, one still chasing trophies in the Premier League's biggest derbies, the other rebuilding a career on America's west coast.

Why the Pairing Still Surprises

Havertz is Leverkusen's academy graduate turned Arsenal talisman. Werner is Leipzig's record scorer turned MLS Designated Player. Neither is a name a modern fan instinctively slots into the other's story. But for two Chelsea seasons, including a Champions League-winning campaign, they were exactly that: teammates, both Germans, both record-breakers at rival academies, both briefly wearing the same blue shirt before their careers scattered back across Europe and beyond.
