Paulo Dybala and Houssem Aouar: Juventus and Lyon's men, together at Roma

Two men, two clubs, one unlikely dressing room

It is a pairing that only makes sense once you remember how footballing careers actually move. Dybala arrived in Rome in 2022 on a free transfer after seven seasons at Juventus, where he won five Serie A titles, four Coppa Italia trophies, was named Serie A's Most Valuable Player in 2019-20, and sits among the club's all-time top scorers. He is, by any reasonable measure, a Juventus man who happens to now play elsewhere.

Aouar's identity was forged at the other end of Ligue 1's hierarchy of memory. He joined Lyon's academy at 11, made his debut in 2017, and by the time he left for Roma in June 2023 he had spent seven professional seasons in the city, inheriting Juninho's number 8 and becoming part of the Lyon side that stunned Juventus itself and Manchester City en route to a Champions League semi-final in 2020. Aouar is, in the collective football memory, Lyon's boy.

So when both turned up in Roma's midfield and attack for the 2023/24 campaign, it put two entirely separate footballing lineages, Juventus' institutional glamour and Lyon's academy pride, into the same colours, however briefly.

Different roads, same destination

Dybala's route to Roma was the culmination of a difficult late period at Juventus, where the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo had pushed him into deeper, less productive roles and injuries had taken their toll. Roma represented a fresh start, and he repaid it quickly: a Europa League runner-up medal in his first season, and continued recognition as one of Serie A's most dangerous attacking players, picking up Player of the Month awards into 2024.

Aouar's move was more of a clean break. After seven years as a first-team fixture at Lyon, he signed a five-year contract with Roma in June 2023 and scored his first goal for the club that August, in a defeat away to Hellas Verona. His stay would prove far shorter than planned, just one season, before he moved on again, this time to Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2024.

A season that does not fit the narrative

Neither man's Roma spell erases what came before or after. Dybala has continued to talk about wanting an "Italian ending" to his career and remains tied, in reputation, to Juventus' trophy cabinet and the World Cup he won with Argentina in between. Aouar, for his part, left Italy after a single season to build a new chapter in Saudi football, later switching his international allegiance to Algeria and representing them at the Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup, a reminder that his story, like Dybala's, was always going to stretch well beyond one club's dressing room.

That is precisely what makes their overlap worth noting. For one season, the embodiment of Juventus and the embodiment of Lyon shared a changing room neither is remembered for. It changed neither man's identity. But for a single season, it was true all the same.
