It is one of football's quieter coincidences that the paths of a Manchester City great and a Liverpool great crossed years before either man had kicked a ball in the Premier League. Bernardo Silva arrived at Monaco in August 2014 on a season-long loan from Benfica, a slight, left-footed teenager still finding his level after coming through Benfica's academy and winning a domestic treble there in 2013–14. Silva's loan became permanent in January 2015, when Benfica sold his rights to Monaco for €15.75 million. He didn't explode immediately, his breakthrough season, in terms of end product, came two years later in 2016–17, when he racked up 11 goals and 12 assists in 58 matches and helped Monaco snatch the Ligue 1 title from Paris Saint-Germain. It was that Champions League form against Manchester City in the 2016–17 knockout rounds that reportedly caught Pep Guardiola's eye, and by the summer of 2017 Silva was on his way to the Etihad, where he would go on to make more than 450 appearances and win six Premier League titles, an FA Cup treble medal in 2023, and become one of the defining midfielders of City's era of dominance.

Fabinho's Parallel Track

Fabinho's route out of the principality ran in the opposite direction. Liverpool agreed a deal reported to be worth up to €50 million to sign him from Monaco, and by his own admission the early days in England were not smooth, he later spoke of needing time to get "up to speed" under Jürgen Klopp before establishing himself as the deep-lying midfield anchor Liverpool fans came to rely on. His career eventually took him away from Europe's top five leagues entirely, a trajectory that news coverage has noted made his continued involvement with the Brazil national team something of a surprise given how such moves usually affect international selection.

Why the Overlap Still Surprises

Neither man is remembered for Monaco first. Silva's identity was forged at City under Guardiola; Fabinho's at Liverpool under Klopp. Say either name to a modern supporter and the club that follows is instant and unshakeable, sky blue for one, red for the other. That is precisely why their shared season in the south of France reads almost like trivia rather than history: two players who would go on to define midfields for fierce Premier League rivals were, for one campaign, simply two young professionals trying to make it at the same unfashionable French club, long before either had lifted a trophy that mattered to the wider world.

It is tempting to imagine what that Monaco dressing room might have made of its own future, a Portuguese playmaker destined for City's treble, a Brazilian holding midfielder destined for Liverpool's Champions League and Premier League triumphs.
