Tchouaméni & Koundé: Bordeaux's El Clásico pipeline

Picture the biggest fixture in club football, Real Madrid against Barcelona, and two names who now line up on opposite sides of it: Aurélien Tchouaméni marshalling Madrid's midfield, Jules Koundé patrolling Barça's right flank. It seems almost impossible that these two were ever teammates, yet for one season at FC Girondins de Bordeaux, they were exactly that, two Gironde-raised kids on the same books before the paths split toward Spain's two superpowers.

Two boys from Gironde, one shared dressing room

It's easy to forget now, with one man draped in Madrid white and the other in Barça blue, that both Tchouaméni and Koundé have the same regional roots. Tchouaméni was born in Rouen but raised in Bordeaux. Koundé was born in Paris but grew up in Landiras, out in the Gironde countryside, before joining Olympique de Cérons and eventually Bordeaux's academy. By the time the 2018-19 season rolled around, both were on the same club's books, Koundé already a first-team regular who'd scored his first Ligue 1 goal against Amiens, Tchouaméni making his senior debut in Europa League qualifying against Ventspils that same campaign. Neither was yet the player the world would come to know, but the overlap is there in the record books: one club, one season, two futures that nobody could have mapped out yet.

Different exits, same destination

What makes the pairing so jarring in hindsight is how differently their careers accelerated once they left Bordeaux, and yet how similarly they landed. Koundé was the first out the door, moving to Sevilla in 2019 for a reported €25 million, where he won the Europa League in his debut season and built a reputation as one of the most composed young centre-backs in Europe. Tchouaméni stayed a little longer, signing for Monaco in January 2020 and spending roughly two and a half years becoming one of Ligue 1's most coveted midfielders, collecting a Young Player of the Year award and back-to-back spots in the league's Team of the Year along the way.

Then came the convergence that nobody could have scripted from Bordeaux: within weeks of each other in the summer of 2022, both men signed for Spain's two great rivals. Tchouaméni joined Real Madrid for a fee that could rise to €100 million. Koundé completed his move to Barcelona, even if registration complications over the salary cap meant he had to wait to make his debut. Both were thrown straight into the World Cup final picture that winter, starting for France as the team finished runners-up to Argentina in Qatar, teammates again, briefly, in blue rather than claret.

Trophies on both sides of the divide

Since then, the symmetry has held in a strange way even as the rivalry has sharpened. Tchouaméni has won La Liga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup with Madrid. Koundé has won La Liga multiple times, the Copa del Rey, and repeated Supercopas with Barcelona, including a final against Real Madrid in which he scored the winner. The two men who once shared a changing room at Bordeaux have gone on to become central figures in the sport's most heated derby, each a repeat winner for the club the other is built to beat.

It's the kind of overlap that only a season-by-season record turns up: not a dramatic falling-out, not a tale of two kids who vowed rivalry from the start, just two Gironde footballers who wore the same shirt once, long before the shirts that would define them.
